Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a nationally recognized, evidence-based training program that teaches people how to recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges. Similar to CPR for physical emergencies, MHFA prepares individuals to provide initial support until appropriate professional help is available during a mental health or substance use crisis.

Mental Health First Aid builds mental health understanding by teaching participants to:

Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges.
Communicate with empathy, respect, and confidence.
Respond using an evidence-based action plan.
Connect individuals with appropriate professional and community resources.

Research shows that MHFA increases mental health knowledge, reduces stigma, and improves confidence in helping others. Studies have found that 56%–97% of participants used their MHFA skills within six months of completing the course, demonstrating that these skills extend beyond the classroom and into everyday interactions (National Council for Mental Wellbeing, n.d.).

Continuing to learn. Mental Health First Aid training helps individuals feel more prepared to support family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and community members.
