Landscape Succession: The Ever-Changing Florida Yard

If you live in Florida, you’re no stranger to constant changes. Be it housing development, large storms, or just the passing of time, it’s likely the landscape you have now is not the one you with which you started. Believe it or not, this is expected and has a name. Ecologists call it succession, which refers to changes, whether sudden or gradual, in any environment, in our case, your landscape.

What Is Ecological Succession?

Ecological succession is the gradual change in a biological community’s composition and structure over time. In home landscapes, that means changes in plant size, tree removal, shifts in sunlight, and soil changes.

Succession isn’t bad; it’s quite natural. It’s simply change, and it can mean an opportunity for your yard.

Primary vs. Secondary Succession

There are two types:

Primary succession starts on bare rock with no soil, such as land covered by a volcanic lava flow. In residential settings, this can have bigger consequences than in your landscape.
Secondary succession happens when vegetation is removed, but the soil remains. Florida homeowners often see this after clear-cutting a lot for construction, prescribed burns, or a hurricane, and in just the passage of time.

Secondary succession often requires heavy machinery, which can compact soil or strip away the organic layer. It can also mean damaged irrigation systems, leaving some areas without water.

How a Landscape Recovers Naturally

Stage 1: Bare ground.

With the vegetation gone, soil is suddenly exposed to new elements. Compacted areas may increase runoff, while newly disturbed soil may absorb more than before. Areas that were once shaded may now be in full sun, and vice versa.

Stage 2: Herbaceous plants and grasses.

The top section of your soil contains a seed bank that begins to wake up. Seeds break dormancy, including weeds, grasses, and wildflowers. As they move through their life cycle, they stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and add organic matter. Pollinators will begin to return, with ground-nesting bees digging nests in the bare soil.

Stage 3: Shrubs and young woody plants.

These bring shade, leaf litter, and more wildlife, including nesting birds.

Stage 4: Trees.

In Florida, pines often appear within about five years if left alone, followed by hardwoods. Left to nature, this takes years.

Managed Landscape Succession

What is outlined above is how that land would return if left to nature with no human involvement. What you and I are likely to encounter won’t be quite this dramatic. At worst, our changes will likely result from hurricanes or prescribed fire run amok. Recovery from these events takes a little thought but can be an opportunity.

Observe Before You Intervene

Your landscape will have shifted. Before replanting, assess sun and shade, irrigation, and landscape use. A spot where a shaded tree once stood might now be perfect for a pollinator garden, or for a patch of grass where kids can play soccer.

Your goal is to balance your home’s needs, plant requirements, and ecological benefits like pollinator support.

Reassess Your Growing Conditions

Sunlight is likely the biggest change. Shade-loving plants like camellias may struggle now that their canopy is gone and may need to be moved. Before choosing replacements, follow the Florida Friendly Landscaping principle of “Right Plant, Right Place” to ensure the plant has the right light, water, and soil.

Now is an ideal time to test the soil.

Plants will grow quickly in the newly opened space, and a soil test will help you determine whether the soil is right for a specific plant. It will also tell you whether liming and soil amendments are appropriate.

Manage Your Changing/Recovering Landscape with Purpose

Don’t just let whatever sprouts take over. Take these practical steps:

Backfill holes left by uprooted trees or rake the soil level.
Remove unwanted volunteers and invasives in their seedling stage.
Repair or audit irrigation systems to deliver appropriate water where it is needed.
Assess your plant’s needs, being careful to fertilize and irrigate appropriately.

Combine ground covers, flowering plants, shrubs, and trees creates a healthier, more resilient landscape than a single plant type.

Turning Change Into an Opportunity

A landscape is a living, changing system. Florida’s growing conditions are challenging at the best of times before you throw in storms and fires. Change can be a blessing in disguise.

Take time to routinely observe, test your soil, plan with intention, and manage your part of the world. Your landscape may end up better than before. As always, your local Extension Office is here to help. Drop by your local office today!!
