What if prescribed fire is not an option? An overview of alternative vegetation and fuel management treatments

Michael G. Andreu, Christopher Kinslow, andStephen F. Enloe

Fire has been a significant part of southeastern American forests for thousands of years. Prescribed fire is an effective method to achieve some land management goals, but sometimes it is not possible to use this tool. Fortunately, there are alternative treatment options that land managers can consider. Although none of these surrogate treatments will produce the same suite of benefits as prescribed fire, they can mimic some of the benefits that prescribed fire creates and are better than applying no treatments. This publication provides an overview for landowners and land managers that want to understand surrogate treatments and the economic and ecological tradeoffs associated with each treatment.

Identification and Control of Coral Ardisia (Ardisia crenata): A Potentially Toxic Plant

B. A. Sellers, S. F. Enloe, Patrick Minogue, and J. Walter

Coral ardisia, also known as coral berry, spice berry, and scratchthroat, was introduced to Florida in the early 1900's for ornamental purposes. Since then, it has escaped cultivation, and it is found in hardwood hammocks and other moist, natural-wooded areas and grazing lands. Although there is no published literature supporting the theory that coral ardisia is toxic, it is suspected that the berries and/or foliage are poisonous to livestock, pets, and humans.

Natural Area Weeds: Old World Climbing Fern (Lygodium microphyllum)

Stephen F. Enloe, Kenneth A. Langeland, and Jeffrey Hutchinson

Old world climbing fern is an aggressive, twining fern that forms dense smothering mats over trees, shrubs, and other vegetation. It spreads by wind-dispersed spores and is often found in very remote areas, making containment very difficult. This publication describes the biology and ecology of this invasive plant and provides management options for both public land managers and private landowners.

Basil V. Iannone III, Emily C. Bell, Shannon Carnevale, Jeff E. Hill, Julie McConnell, Martin Main, Stephen F. Enloe, Steven A. Johnson, James P. Cuda, Shirley M. Baker, and Michael Andreu

This publication introduces a standardized set of seven terms compiled by the members of the UF|IFAS Invasive Species Council that can describe most situations involving invasive species, limit the confusion caused by jargon and incorrect usage, and deliver a simplified and unified message about the impacts of invasive species and how to best prevent and control them, potentially increasing the environmental and socioeconomic benefits of invasive species Extension and outreach programs.

Natural Area Weeds: Chinese Tallow [Triadica sebifera (L.) Small]

Kenneth A. Langeland andStephen F. Enloe

An estimated 25,000 plant species have been brought into Florida for use as agricultural crops or landscape plants. While only a small number of these have become invasive, those that do can adversely affect native plant communities by competing for space and resources, disrupting hydrologic and fire regimes, or hybridizing with native species. They must be managed for the protection of native communities in natural areas. Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera (L.) Small is one of these invasive plant species.

Herbicide Application Techniques for Woody Plant Control

Jason Ferrell, Stephen F. Enloe, andBrent Sellers

The progression of trees and other woody plants into pastures, fencerows, ditch banks, rights-of-way and other areas is a common occurrence. These woody species can be particularly troublesome and require control since they will compromise fence intregrity, impede canal drainage, interfere with transmission of electricity, and some species (such as cherry trees) are highly poisonous to livestock. The aim of this publication is to detail the techniques for the removal of woody plants.
