The Value of Private Non-Industrial Forestland for Wildlife Species Conservation

Animals in Florida provide a variety of benefits to people, from recreation to protection of human life and property. By measuring the economic value of these benefits, we can assign a monetary value to the habitats that sustain these species and assess the value that is lost when development or other human-based activities degrade animal habitat. This fact sheet presents the results of a study that assessed the value of protecting five animal species in Florida and showed the economic value of protecting animal habitat.

Fire is an integral part of the Florida landscape. But what resources exist to support our private landowners who want to incorporate prescribed fires into their management plans? Without a team of skilled professionals on the payroll, safety and fire knowledge are of utmost importance to anyone wanting to ignite prescribed fires on their land. This publication aims to connect Florida landowners with the resources they need for prescribed burning, from planning to ignition to mop up and declaring a fire out. Resources are presented for local, boots-on-the-ground help, as well as training and regional information. Although this is not a comprehensive list, it will guide private landowners who wish to manage their properties with prescribed fire.

Are there bats in my house? Why? And what should I do about it? Bats are the only major predator of night-flying insects, which makes them an important part of our ecosystem. Occasionally, a single bat or group of bats find their way into a human-made structure. The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the Home series is intended to answer frequently asked questions, allay fears, and provide practical help to the public. All bats in Florida are protected, and it is important to seek assistance and follow state and federal laws. This publication provides information to educate homeowners on appropriate and lawful ways to deal with bats in buildings.

Bats are declining throughout North America, including Florida. This is worrisome because bats are an essential part of natural ecosystems throughout the world, serving as valuable allies to humans by consuming enormous quantities of night-flying insects, many of which are pests to humans and to crops. In tropical countries, bats also play a vital role in pollinating flowers and dispersing seeds.

Thirteen different species of bats live in Florida year-round. All of them sleep in roosts during the day and emerge at dusk to feed on insects throughout the night. Due to their small size and high metabolism, bats have exceptionally high energy demands. This means that each bat consumes large quantities of insects. During the summer, when pregnant and nursing female bats have especially high energy requirements, each bat may consume as much as two thirds of its body weight per night. This would be the equivalent of a 150-pound human consuming 100 pounds of food per day!

Bats can be a beneficial addition to the wildlife community on your property. With the exception of a few uncommon bats in the Florida Keys, all resident bats in Florida eat insects. Bats reduce common insect pests by consuming them in large quantities and the sound of bat calls can repel additional insects from areas where bats spend time. By attracting bats to your farm, forest, or backyard you may substantially reduce the number of nocturnal insects nearby.
