Reducing mosquito breeding sources in the landscape begins with identifying areas where water can collect and remain standing. Many common landscape features and gardening items can hold enough water for mosquitoes to complete their life cycle. Routine inspection and maintenance of these areas can help minimize mosquito populations around the home and garden.

One of the most effective ways to prevent mosquitoes from breeding around the landscape is to empty or flush standing water at least once a week. When possible, scrub container surfaces with a sponge or brush to remove mosquito eggs that may be attached to the sides.

Common landscape items that can collect water include:

Bird baths
Flowerpot saucers
Buckets
Watering cans
Bromeliads
Tarps
Wheelbarrows
Roof gutters and downspouts
Rain barrels that are not properly screened or covered
Open trash cans and/or lids

Create a Weekly Mosquito Prevention Checklist

A simple way to stay on top of mosquito management is to develop a weekly checklist for your property. Walk around your landscape and identify objects that currently hold water or could potentially collect water after rainfall or irrigation. Record the item and its location so it can be included in your routine landscape maintenance activities.

By inspecting and managing these containers once a week, you can significantly reduce mosquito breeding opportunities around your home.

Weekly Checklist to Reduce Mosquito Breeding in the Landscape

Use this checklist once a week as part of your regular landscape maintenance routine:

Flush Bromeliads
- Rinse bromeliads thoroughly with a garden hose to dislodge mosquito larvae and eggs. (*see note below on using water in the landscape)
- Pay special attention to larger bromeliads that retain water for extended periods.

Refresh Bird Baths
- Empty standing water.
- Scrub surfaces with a sponge or brush to remove eggs and algae.
- Refill with fresh water. (*see note below on using water in the landscape)
Empty Water-Holding Containers
- Dump standing water from:
  - Flowerpot saucers
  - Buckets
  - Watering cans
  - Trash cans and/or lids
  - Wheelbarrows
  - Tarps
  - Any other containers capable of collecting rainwater
Inspect Rain Barrels
Check Gutters and Downspouts
- Remove leaves and debris from gutters.
- Inspect downspouts and drainage areas for standing water.
- Flush problem areas with clean water if necessary.
Inspect Low Areas in the Landscape
- Look for puddles or depressions where water remains for several days after rainfall or irrigation.
Small landscape pond at UF/IFAS Extension Polk County.
- Improve drainage or fill low spots if water routinely accumulates.
Monitor Water Features
- Check ornamental ponds, fountains, and water gardens for proper circulation.
- Consider biological controls such as mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) where appropriate.
- Maintain pumps and aeration devices to keep water moving.
Walk the Landscape
- Conduct a final walk-through of the property. Frequent landscape checks are an essential part of integrated pest management (IPM).
- Look for any new items or areas that may collect water and add them to your checklist.

A personalized mosquito prevention checklist helps ensure that potential breeding sites are not overlooked. By spending just a few minutes each week inspecting and maintaining water-holding features, homeowners can reduce mosquito populations while supporting a healthy and enjoyable landscape.

*Note on using water in the landscape: Please follow local water restrictions (days and times allowed) when using a garden water hose to flush landscape items. For Polk County residents or those living in the South Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) region, please check for the most recent updates to watering restrictions: https://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/business/epermitting/district-water-restrictions. Mosquito Prevention and Rain Barrels

Rain barrels are a valuable and environmentally friendly addition to the landscape. They help conserve water for irrigation, reduce stormwater runoff, and support sustainable gardening practices. When responsibly managed, rain barrels do not have to contribute to mosquito problems.

To prevent mosquitoes from breeding in rain barrels:

Use rain barrels with tightly fitting lids.
Cover all openings with fine mesh screens to prevent adult mosquitoes from reaching the stored water.
Regularly inspect screens for tears, gaps, or damage.
Ensure overflow outlets are screened and functioning properly.
Prevent water from pooling around the base of the barrel.
Use mosquito control products containing Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), such as mosquito dunks or granules, according to label directions. Bti is a biological larvicide that targets mosquito larvae and is considered safe for use in rain barrels intended for landscape irrigation.

Proper screening prevents adult mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water, while Bti controls mosquito larvae if mosquitoes gain access to the barrel. Together, these practices allow homeowners to enjoy the benefits of rainwater harvesting without creating a mosquito breeding site.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ and Mosquito Prevention

Many of these mosquito prevention practices align with the principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™. Regular maintenance of rain barrels, gutters, bird baths, water features, and other water-holding containers helps conserve resources, protect water quality, reduce pest problems, and create a healthier outdoor environment. By eliminating unnecessary sources of standing water while utilizing sustainable practices such as rainwater harvesting and biological controls, homeowners can maintain attractive landscapes that are both environmentally responsible and less favorable for mosquitoes.
