Profitability and Cost Estimates for Producing Tropical Hibiscus in South Florida

Tropical hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is a bushy evergreen shrub or small tree native to the temperate regions of Asia and an economically significant crop in Florida. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, the market value of the ornamental industry in Miami-Dade County was $697 million, and approximately 25% of the production was in hibiscus. Demand for the cultivation of plants with minimal pesticides is rising due to concerns about potential adverse environmental and health effects. Integrated pest management, or IPM, is an alternative to conventional pesticide application. A broad-based approach, it integrates both chemical and non-chemical practices for sustainable control of pests. To help growers and other stakeholders determine the best approach to changing demands for pesticide management, this publication estimates the costs and returns of producing tropical hibiscus on an established nursery in south Florida using both traditional and IPM methods.

This article presents findings from a study (Song et al. 2022) that investigated how irrigation scheduling methods using soil moisture sensors and estimates of water loss from soil and plants (i.e., evapotranspiration) can conserve water and reduce nutrient loss while maintaining or even improving crop productivity in south Florida. The insights gained are intended to help farmers, homeowners, and Extension agents better understand the benefits of information-driven irrigation scheduling and adopt an evidence-based practice for improved agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. The UF/IFAS South Florida Beef Forage Program (SFBFP) in conjunction with the UF/IFAS Program Evaluation and Organizational Development unit created a survey in 1982 to evaluate ranch management practices and determine benchmarks in cattle production and pasture management. The survey is updated and distributed every five years to ranchers in 17 south Florida counties: Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Martin, Okeechobee, Pasco, Polk, St. Lucie, and Sarasota. This data serves Florida ranchers, their allied industries, and governmental and nongovernmental agencies making or advocating for policy that affects ranchers.
