Featured Creatures collection was founded in1996, a cooperative venture of the University of Florida's Entomology and Nematology Department and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Division of Plant Industry.  It provides in-depth profiles of insects, nematodes, arachnids and other organisms.

Soybean Cyst Nematode, Heterodera glycines (Ichinohe, 1952) (Chromadorea: Rhabdita: Heteroderidae)

The nematode Heterodera glycines, known as soybean cyst nematode (SCN), is the most economically damaging pest of soybean crops in the United States and around the world. Members of the Heteroderidae family belong in the order Tylenchida; most are plant parasitic while some are insect parasites. They are obligate parasites that attack different species of crops and weeds. Heteroderidae are divided into two groups: cyst and cystoid based on morphological alterations in their skin. The cyst group are unique in that the female skin changes, transforming into a hardened cyst that protects her eggs. Unlike many plant parasites, there may be little to no aboveground evidence of an infestation with H. glycines. They are extremely damaging to the agricultural economy and impossible to eradicate once established, but with proper management, it is possible to minimize H. glycines populations and maximize yield.

Anopheles squamosus (Theobald, 1901) (Insecta: Diptera: Culicidae: Culicine)

The genus Anopheles, the marsh mosquitoes, comprises approximately 500 species, only a few of which are capable of transmitting malaria parasites. With the global consorted efforts to eliminate malaria, some regions and countries are in or are approaching the malaria elimination phase, but residual malaria transmissions still linger in other, malaria pre-elimination countries. These transmissions may be vectored by lesser-known mosquito species such as Anopheles squamosus, one of the most abundantly caught anopheline species in malaria vector surveillance studies in southern African countries. Though An. squamosus is predominantly recognized as a zoophilic species, it has been discovered to be highly anthropophilic in certain areas, particularly in Southern Zambia. Additionally, Plasmodium falciparum, the causal agent of human malaria, has been detected in An. squamosus. These factors position An. squamosus as a potential primary vector of malaria in some pre-elimination zones.

Melanchroia chephise, commonly known as the snowbush spanworm or white-tipped black, is an occasional insect pest of snowbush shrubs and several other ornamental plant species. Found throughout the southern United States, these gregarious moth caterpillars can commonly be found defoliating their chosen hosts soon after they emerge en masse. The colorful appearance of the caterpillars may be alarming, but they pose little risk to people, and usually offer no lasting harm to the plants they feed on. The adult moths, with their black and white wings, can be an attractive addition to a pollinator garden. Dark Ricefield Mosquito, Psorophora cyanescens (Coquillett, 1902) (Insecta: Diptera: Culicidae)

The genus Psorophora is in the subfamily Culicinae and the tribe Aedini. This genus is comprised of relatively ornate mosquitoes, some species of which are quite large. As of 2025, there are 49 species of Psorophora divided into three subgenera: Grabhamia, Janthinosoma, and Psorophora. The genus Psorophora is most diverse in tropical and temperate regions of the Americas. This publication focuses on Psorophora cyanescens, a species in the subgenus Janthinosoma.

While feeding on stored grains, adults bore holes into the kernels. Larvae can crawl inside a kernel through these holes, then cause further damage to the kernels by feeding on both the endosperm and the germ. This loss of grain can result in devastating economic impacts and lead to secondary issues such as the growth of fungi, further compromising grain quality and safety. Effective management strategies are crucial to mitigate these impacts.

Members of the genus are found throughout North and Central America, typically burrowing in sandy or well-drained soils. There are currently 20 species across four subgenera, but nesting biology has been described for only five of these, including Epimelissodes aegis. All known species in the genus are hosts to kleptoparasitic bees in the genus Triepeolus, which lay their eggs in the nests of other bees and rely on stolen pollen and nectar provisions to rear their offspring.

This publication describes Aedes triseriatus (Say, 1823), a mosquito species native to eastern and central North America commonly known as the eastern tree hole mosquito. Due to the potential risk of its introduction and establishment beyond its native range, it is considered a potential invasive species, which is of particular concern because Aedes triseriatus is the primary vector of La Crosse virus (LACv), which is the most prevalent cause of pediatric arboviral encephalitis in North America.

Relapsing Fever Tick Ornithodoros turicata Dugès, 1876 (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae)

Ornithodoros turicata (Dugès, 1876), commonly referred to as the relapsing fever tick, is a soft tick species belonging to the family Argasidae. It is a key vector of Borrelia turicatae, a spirochete bacterium responsible for causing tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). Known for its elusive behavior, O. turicata feeds rapidly and inhabits concealed environments such as caves, animal burrows, and cabins. These behaviors, combined with its role in transmitting relapsing fever, pose significant challenges for public health management and disease prevention efforts. While O. turicata is more commonly associated with the southwestern United States, it has been reported in parts of Florida, expanding its recognized range and relevance. This tick’s ability to survive for long periods without feeding and its ability to rapidly transmit pathogens during its short bloodmeals makes it an important vector for zoonotic diseases.

Southeastern Blueberry Bee Habropoda laboriosa (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Apidae)

This publication describes the bee's distribution, morphology and life cycle, and economic impact (it is the most effective pollinator for blueberries because of its buzz pollination, wherein it vibrates its wings at the perfect frequency to get the blueberry flower to release the most pollen). The publication includes management tips for blueberry producers interested in supporting this valuable bee species.

This publication describes chalcoela moths, unusual predatory moths that occur across North America and the Caribbean. These moths are predators of paper wasps. They lay their eggs in wasp nests on wasp larvae and pupae. Immature moths spend all of their developmental stages inside paper wasp nests feeding on wasp larvae and pupae before pupating, themselves.

Two-Spot Cotton Leafhopper Amrasca biguttula (Ishida) (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)

Amrasca biguttula, Ishida (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), also known as the two-spot cotton leafhopper, became established in Florida in 2024 where it causes significant damage to a range of ornamental and horticultural crops. It is a major pest of okra (Abelmoschus esculentum L.), eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) and various types of hibiscus (Hibiscus spp. L.). It is also a major pest of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in Asia and poses a threat to cotton production in Florida and the southeast USA. Regulatory restrictions have been imposed on the shipment of leafhopper hosts from Florida to other states because of this threat. Therefore, the pest poses a significant regulatory burden to the state in addition to damage presently inflicted on production of ornamental and vegetable crops, and the threat to cotton grown in the state’s Panhandle.

Rice Stink Bug, Oebalus pugnax (Fabricius) (Insecta: Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)

This publication describes the rice stink bug, Oebalus pugnax (Fabricius), a serious pest of a variety of crops, like many other stink bug species, but particularly rice plants. It is widespread through the southeastern United States, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Rice is the preferred host for all O. pugnax stages, and from early nymphs to reproductive adults, this insect is likely to abandon weedy host plants to go feed on developing rice kernels from heading rice plants, if the crop is found nearby.

Dark Ricefield Mosquito, Psorophora cyanescens (Coquillett, 1902) (Insecta: Diptera: Culicidae)

The genus Psorophora is in the subfamily Culicinae and the tribe Aedini. This genus is comprised of relatively ornate mosquitoes, some species of which are quite large. As of 2025, there are 49 species of Psorophora divided into three subgenera: Grabhamia, Janthinosoma, and Psorophora. The genus Psorophora is most diverse in tropical and temperate regions of the Americas. This publication focuses on Psorophora cyanescens, a species in the subgenus Janthinosoma.
