The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a top predator that lives along the southern tip of peninsular Florida. Crocodiles inhabit saltwater, brackish water, or freshwater near coastal areas in mangrove-lined ponds, creeks, coves, man-made ponds, and canals. In 1975, the American crocodile was federally listed as an endangered species. Conservation and management have helped the south Florida crocodile population rebound, resulting in its downlisting to threatened in 2007. However, habitat modification and decreased freshwater flow to estuaries still present ongoing concerns for this threatened species.

Ecological Risk Assessment for Invasive Wildlife in Florida

Global trade and travel transport plants and animals from native ranges to new ecosystems. About 10–20% of nonnative (exotic, alien) species that arrive in new locales become invasive, meaning they are likely to harm the environment, economy, or public health. Preventing the introduction of invasive species is the most effective way to protect native biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. Once an invader begins to establish and spread, its control costs increase rapidly.

Effects of Canals and Levees on Everglades Ecosystems: Circular

The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively portray the hydrological and ecological effects of canals and levees within the EPA landscape and to consider ways their impacts may be mitigated.

Effects of Canals and Levees on Everglades Ecosystems (Fact Sheet)

Canals and levees are the foundation of south Florida's water-management system. However, degradation of Everglades ecosystems has resulted directly from these structures and their effects of drainage and impoundment. The purpose of this fact sheet is to summarize the science on ecological and hydrological impacts of Everglades canals and levees.

Why do we need environmental monitoring for Everglades restoration?

Monitoring ecosystems is similar to monitoring human health. There are both short-term and long-term indicators of ecosystem health. In general, however, ecosystems require long-term monitoring because they are complex and sensitive, and because they change slowly. Ecosystem monitoring means measuring physical, chemical, and/or biological variables over time to provide information on ecosystem change. It is only through such careful observation that we can evaluate the health of our natural resources and make science-based management decisions.

Growth and Spread of the Argentine Black and White Tegu Population in Florida

Rebecca G. Harvey, Justin R. Dalaba, Jenny Ketterlin, Art Roybal, Daniel Quinn, and Frank J. Mazzotti

The Argentine black and white tegu is one of the largest lizard species in the Western Hemisphere, growing up to four feet long. The tegu’s broad habitat use and omnivorous diet create the potential for severe ecological impacts in areas outside its native habitat. This publication presents updated information about efforts to understand and manage the problem of invasive tegus in the state of Florida. It presents the implications of continued expansion of their range.
