A Guide to Scale Insect Identification

Control of scale insects in Florida citrus utilizes native and introduced exotic natural enemies, including predators, parasites, and pathogens. Under most conditions, predators and parasites suppress scale pest populations to a level where chemical intervention is unnecessary. In situations where natural enemies do not provide the necessary control, integrated pest management (IPM) is used since it minimizes negative effects on natural enemies. Increases in scale insect populations involve multiple factors including: a) disruption of biological control by weather; b) infestation of areas by scale insects where natural enemies do not exist; and c) disruption of natural enemies by the repeated use of non-selective pesticides.

If you find an insect you can't identify, you are welcome to collect a specimen and send it to the UF/IFAS Insect Identification Lab. All specimens must be accompanied by the Insect Identification Lab's Sample Submission Form. This publication includes a fillable pdf of that form. Diagnosis of submitted samples costs $15 per sample, which can be paid via an enclosed check or money order made payable to the University of Florida, or via credit card or Google Pay. Magnificent Moths: A Guide to Begin “Mothing” and Contributing Your Observations to iNaturalist

The insects discussed in this article are sporadic pests of Florida citrus and may be found on many alternate hosts in or near citrus plantings. These pests rarely need treatment with pesticides unless populations become excessive due to weather conditions or pesticide upsets. Where treatment is necessary, growers should apply only spot treatment of infested areas.

Termite Species Distribution in Florida and UF Termite Identification Services

There are 20 termite species established in Florida, but not all of them have a pest status, and some invasive termite species affect only parts of the state. This publication highlights where each termite species is known to be established, so that Florida residents, pest control companies and UF/IFAS Extension agents can easily learn the termite risk at any given location within the state. It is a companion resource to the online termite distribution map available at https://flrec.ifas.ufl.edu/termites-in-florida/termite-distribution/. The UF/IFAS termite research team provides identification services to ensure proper treatment of infestations. In addition, as some invasive species continue to spread, there is a need to continue reporting termite samples so that various communities across Florida have access to up-to-date knowledge of what termite species have been reported in their respective areas.

A Guide to Soil Insect Pests Identification

Soil provides a structure for a plant to anchor its roots and is a source of nutrition and water necessary for plant growth. Soil-inhabiting insects also utilize this substrate for part of or for their entire life. Although many insects are dependent on soil for food and shelter, only a few soil-borne insects such as weevils, ants, and termites are detrimental to the citrus tree.
