The Impacts of Trimming Mangroves

Mangroves provide quintessential ecosystem services in Florida, where there are three native mangrove species: red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa). Mangroves extend from the Florida Keys up to peninsular Florida along the coastlines.They are often removed or trimmed to capitalize on coastal views valued by residents and visitors. To protect mangroves and the ecosystem services they provide, the 1996 Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act provides management guidance. A literature review about trimming mangroves uncovered that not all species remain healthy after trimming. To minimize the negative impacts of trimming, landowners should carefully consider the amount of biomass removed, trimming frequency and timing, and best trimming techniques for the mangrove species they are managing.

Mangrove Trimming Regulations

Mangroves are salt-tolerant coastal trees that sequester carbon, filter water, act as buffers from storms, and provide habitat for wildlife. In Florida, three native species—Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove), Avicennia germinans (black mangrove), and Laguncularia racemosa (white mangrove)—each with unique adaptations to salinity and hydrology, thrive along distinct zones of the intertidal gradient. As mangrove ecosystems migrate northward with climate change, their ecological value and economic value grow. But they face growing threats from development, pollution, and mismanagement. Improper trimming practices can harm mangroves' health and resilience, especially along developed coastlines. This publication aims to educate landowners, property managers, and the public on the ecological importance of mangroves, while providing best practices for responsible trimming and long-term preservation.

Factors Driving Mangrove Range Expansion

Florida is home to multiple mangrove species, including black mangroves, white mangroves, and red mangroves. Black and red mangroves have expanded their range along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts in Florida as winter temperatures have increased and sea levels have risen, increasing their abundance and even converting salt marshes into mangrove forests. There are several factors that dictate mangrove migration on Florida’s coastlines. This publication is intended to educate the public and land managers about the factors driving mangrove range expansion. Though all the mangrove species listed above have been expanding their northern range limit, for the purposes of this publication, we will focus on the range expansion of black mangroves, which are more prevalent than other mangrove species.
