Managing Spider Mites in Florida Hops

This publication is designed to provide information on managing spider mites on hops grown in Florida to hops growers, UF/IFAS Extension agents, and other crop protection professionals. Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) (Cannabinaceae), a new crop for Florida, has been studied at the UF/IFAS Gulf Coast Research and Education Center (GCREC) since 2016. A fall and spring crop have been cultivated each year, providing opportunity to observe pests and evaluate pest management strategies over several seasons. Spider mites (Trombidiformes: Tetranychidae) have been a consistent pest of hops at GCREC each season. Information on chemical and biological control is provided.

In the past decade, blackberry production in Florida increased from 64 acres in 2007 to 173 acres in 2017.  The many health benefits acquired from these fruits make them good alternative options for growers in Florida to diversify their operations by planting some new and less traditional crops, providing them a niche in the Florida agriculture market. The intended audience of this publication includes blackberry and pomegranate growers in Florida as well as Extension agents providing expert recommendations to both these industries. Two-Spot Cotton Leafhopper Amrasca biguttula (Ishida) (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)

Amrasca biguttula, Ishida (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), also known as the two-spot cotton leafhopper, became established in Florida in 2024 where it causes significant damage to a range of ornamental and horticultural crops. It is a major pest of okra (Abelmoschus esculentum L.), eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) and various types of hibiscus (Hibiscus spp. L.). It is also a major pest of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in Asia and poses a threat to cotton production in Florida and the southeast USA. Regulatory restrictions have been imposed on the shipment of leafhopper hosts from Florida to other states because of this threat. Therefore, the pest poses a significant regulatory burden to the state in addition to damage presently inflicted on production of ornamental and vegetable crops, and the threat to cotton grown in the state’s Panhandle.

Managing Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus in Florida Tomato

Bemisia tabaci MEAM1, the sweetpotato or silverleaf whitefly, transmits tomato yellow leaf curl virus, which significantly impacts production of tomato in Florida. This publication provides information on managing Bemisia tabaci and tomato yellow leaf curl virus to growers, UF/IFAS Extension agents, and other crop protection professionals. The publication describes and explains management strategies including the prompt destruction of harvested fields, the use of metalized plastic mulches and tolerant tomato varieties, and treatment of crops with insecticides and biopesticides for the control of Bemisia tabaci.

The Predatory Mite Amblyseius tamatavensis (Blommers) (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

The predatory mite Amblyseius tamatavensis (Blommers) belongs to the order Mesostigmata and the family Phytoseiidae. This family is important because it includes commercially available biological control agents and natural enemies of plant-feeding mites and small, soft-bodied insects. Amblyseius tamatavensis is a generalist predatory mite, and it has been found in many cropping systems feeding on small hemipteran insects and pollen when prey is not present.
