UF/IFAS está trabajando para identificar variedades y recomendaciones de siembra que puedan ser tanto rentables para los productores como ambientalmente responsables. Se hacen ensayos de variedades para encontrar cáñamo comercializable que crezca bien en los diversos suelos, climas y latitudes de Florida. También se están realizando investigaciones económicas para encontrar los costos de los insumos y el valor de mercado esperado. Y adicionalmente se desarrollan estudios de riesgo de invasividad.

Lúpulo
El lúpulo (Humulus lupulus) es una planta trepadora herbácea perenne que se cultiva comúnmente por sus estróbilos o conos. Los conos se utilizan a menudo para dar sabor y aroma en alimentos, té y cerveza. El lúpulo puede ser una adición única a un jardín o paisaje doméstico.

Jujube as a Florida Fruit Crop

Despite being cultivated in China for millennia, the Chinese jujube is mostly unknown to Western consumers. The fruits are borne from vigorous trees that are tolerant to drought and other stresses, as well as disease. A number of cultivars have been demonstrated to produce in Florida. This publication is a review of jujube genetics and management as this crop gains favor among growers on small farms and home growers.
Kratom: Botanical Insights and Cultivation Practices for a Conspicuous Medicinal Tree Species

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a member of the family Rubiaceae, a group of plants known for producing diverse bioactive metabolites. Arguably, the most popular member of the Rubiaceae family is coffee (Coffea arabica), which yields seeds (coffee beans) that contain bioactive metabolites, including the central nervous system stimulant caffeine. Unlike coffee, kratom is a facultatively deciduous tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. Other species closely related to kratom include M. hirsuta, M. diversifolia, and M. parvifolia. This publication offers educational insights into the horticultural aspects of kratom based on empirical scientific research for anyone interested in cultivating it.
Florida Cultivation Guide for Malabar Spinach

Malabar spinach (Basella spp.) is a nutritious vegetable in the family Basellaceae. Malabar spinach goes by many names, including Indian spinach, Ceylon spinach, vine spinach, and climbing spinach. Malabar spinach has long been established in cultivation in China and India. This spinach is a novel crop to Florida and is currently grown only for niche markets. However, Florida’s suitable climate coupled with Malabar spinach’s great taste and nutritional quality suggest that this crop has great potential for commercial cultivation.
