The lychee erinose mite is an important pest of lychee and is found in lychee-producing countries in Asia and South America and in Australia, Hawaii, and Brazil, where it has has caused an estimated 70–80% yield reduction and a 20% increase in production costs. Found in Lee County, Florida, in 2018, it has since spread to several counties in central and south Florida. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services , Division of Plant Industry established an eradication program and a quarantine in Lee county. Management in other countries includes chemical control in combination with pruning. The purpose of this publication is to provide an in-depth profile of the lychee erinose mite. The Citrus Red Mite (Panonychus citri): A Pest of Citrus Crops

Panonychus citri is a phytophagous mite of economic importance in open citrus orchards and a major pest in Citrus Under Protective Screen (CUPS), a new undercover production system tested in Florida. Immatures and adults feed on citrus leaves, fruits, and green twigs resulting in mesophyll collapse, shoot dieback, and fruit drop. In Florida, P. citri occurs throughout the year but is most abundant in spring or early summer and autumn or early winter. Although chemical sprays like Abamectin or Fenbutatin oxide provide some control of P. citri, resistance has been reported in different regions of the world. Several predatory insects and mites have been shown to attack the mite and could be potential natural enemies to use in biological control programs.

The predatory mite Amblyseius tamatavensis (Blommers) belongs to the order Mesostigmata and the family Phytoseiidae. This family is important because it includes commercially available biological control agents and natural enemies of plant-feeding mites and small, soft-bodied insects. Amblyseius tamatavensis is a generalist predatory mite, and it has been found in many cropping systems feeding on small hemipteran insects and pollen when prey is not present.

Ornithodoros turicata (Dugès, 1876), commonly referred to as the relapsing fever tick, is a soft tick species belonging to the family Argasidae. It is a key vector of Borrelia turicatae, a spirochete bacterium responsible for causing tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). Known for its elusive behavior, O. turicata feeds rapidly and inhabits concealed environments such as caves, animal burrows, and cabins. These behaviors, combined with its role in transmitting relapsing fever, pose significant challenges for public health management and disease prevention efforts. While O. turicata is more commonly associated with the southwestern United States, it has been reported in parts of Florida, expanding its recognized range and relevance. This tick’s ability to survive for long periods without feeding and its ability to rapidly transmit pathogens during its short bloodmeals makes it an important vector for zoonotic diseases.
