The North Florida Research & Education Center (NFREC) is one of the largest and the most diverse units of UF/IFAS, consisting of research and education campuses in Quincy and Marianna, Florida. The research and extension programs at NFREC are designed to help agricultural and natural resource clientele adapt and manage resources and agricultural operations effectively and profitably in a changing socioeconomic and environmentally aware setting.

Pasture Mealybug: A New Threat for Pasture Grass, Turfgrass, and Sugarcane in Florida

The pasture mealybug (Heliococcus summervillei Brookes) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae), a pest now found in Florida, can cause severe dieback of grasses. It was first reported in the continental US in Texas in October 2025, though researchers suspect it arrived before 2022. In Texas, it was found on many grasses, including bermudagrass, bahiagrass, and johnsongrass. Along with pasture and turfgrass, it has emerged as an important pest of sugarcane, spreading from Texas to Louisiana. In Florida, it was first reported in late May 2026 on limpograss in the southeastern part of the state. As of June 19, 2026, surveys confirmed the mealybug in 15 Florida counties including: Brevard, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Lee, Martin, Okeechobee, Osceola, Palm Beach, Polk, and St. Lucie. The most damage has been observed on limpograss and sugarcane, but several other grasses are affected, including bahiagrass and bermudagrass.

Interpreting Soil Microbial Data Metrics for Soil Health

Soil microbes play important roles in soil health processes, such as nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and aggregate stability. Soil testing labs now include microbial analyses, which often come with unfamiliar terms. This publication aims to educate producers, Extension agents, policymakers, and the public on how to interpret these soil microbial results to better understand their implications for soil health and crop production.

The Sandhills Longhorn Bee, Epimelissodes aegis (LaBerge, 1956) (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Apidae: Apinae)

This publication (part of the Featured Creatures collection, which profiles insects, nematodes, arachnids and other Florida organisms  for interested laypersons with some knowledge of biology and for academic audiences), describes the sandhills longhorn bee, Epimelissodes aegis (LaBerge), a solitary bee known to pollinate sunflowers and related plants. It includes facts about its distribution, biology, and economic importance, and lists its host plants. Members of the genus are found throughout North and Central America, typically burrowing in sandy or well-drained soils. There are currently 20 species across four subgenera, but nesting biology has been described for only five of these, including Epimelissodes aegis. All known species in the genus are hosts to kleptoparasitic bees in the genus Triepeolus, which lay their eggs in the nests of other bees and rely on stolen pollen and nectar provisions to rear their offspring.

Despite its significance, rust disease in warm-season grass is often overlooked. This publication reports on rust disease observed in Florida pastures and offers practical, non-technical knowledge and general management suggestions to mitigate the threat of rust disease. It is aimed at producers, landowners, and the public.

Biology, Ecology, and Benefits of Ectomycorrhizal Fungi in Natural and Managed Forest Ecosystems

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) form symbiotic relationships with approximately 60% of trees and woody plants among temperate and boreal forests. EMF also serve as the primary symbionts in subtropical and tropical forests, particularly in conifer forests, including those in Florida's climate. These fungi influence the global carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles, sequestering or supplying these elements as necessary for ecosystem processes and resilience. However, EMF are susceptible to environmental stressors and management practices, including fertilizers, fungicides, and mechanical disturbances. This publication aims to provide general knowledge to the general public on the biology and ecological functions of EMF in natural and managed forest ecosystems. By understanding the role and benefits of EMF in these environments, forest managers, tree nursery operators, and timber industry stakeholders can gain valuable insights for incorporating EMF into their management practices.

Potential and Economic Valuation of Carbon in Grasslands

2025 Cool-Season Forage Variety Recommendations for Florida

A Preliminary Survey of Mycotoxins Identified from Florida Bahiagrass Pastures

The beef cattle ranchers in Florida reported some health issues related to cattle grazing on warm-season grass pastures, such as bahiagrass and bermudagrass. The illness was not attributable to nutritional imbalances, or other possible causes. The focus then turned to what the animals were consuming, and forages were implicated. In general, the forages in Florida are just fine, however, sometimes under certain circumstances the fungi that live in our forages may produce “secondary metabolites”. All the forage harbor fungi. Some fungi are good in that they aid our forages to grow better, helping to mine nutrients from the soil or atmosphere. Sometimes they are not so good, like when high levels of ergotized seed occur in the seed heads of bahiagrass.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, as symbionts to host plants, play a pivotal role in regulating plant nutrient uptake and maintaining soil health. As approximately 80%-90% of terrestrial plants are colonized by mycorrhizal fungi, this fungal group significantly contributes to the overall yield and functions in crop production. This publication provides updated general knowledge on the biology and ecological functions of the most common types of mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi are highly sensitive to environmental stressors and management practices, such as the application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers, as well as fungicides. An enhanced understanding of mycorrhizal fungi can raise awareness among growers, prompting them to consider mycorrhizal fungal activities when managing their farms. Moreover, it can improve the general public's knowledge of the role mycorrhizal fungi play in natural terrestrial ecosystems, including agricultural and forest ecosystems.

Camera Trapping for Wildlife

Carinata research in the SE US through a public-private partnership has developed a comprehensive body of knowledge regarding carinata agronomics, life cycle analysis, best management practices and economics. Crapemyrtle Pruning

Pruning is one of the most controversial aspects of maintaining crapemyrtle. Traditionally, many crapemyrtles were routinely topped, leaving large branch and stem stubs. This practice has been called "crape murder" because most people dislike the winter appearance and many professionals believe the practice impacts crapemyrtle health and structural integrity. UF/IFAS research has clarified the effects of various crapemyrtle pruning practices that resulted in the recommendations in this publication.

How to Build a Blackberry Trellis System: A Complete Guide

Blackberry (Rubus spp.) is a deciduous fruit crop. The fruit are usually small, round, and dark purple to black. Blackberry fruit is comprised of multiple drupelets that cluster together to form a berry, which has a glossy appearance when matured. Blackberries have a complex flavor profile that blends sweetness and acidity, and taste may vary depending on the variety and maturity stage. They are rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Blackberries are best grown in sub-tropical to temperate climates. Blackberry is a new emerging fruit crop in Florida, where they are harvested in May-June. There are several varieties, some of which are native to Florida. This publication aims to provide a general overview of the importance of trellis, different types of trellis, and their installation in blackberry production for county and state Extension faculty, growers, homeowners, and students interested in growing blackberries in Florida.

Insect and Mite Pest Management in Florida Peanut

Peanut is one of the most important cash crops grown in the United States, with an estimated production value of over $1 billion. The southeastern coastal plains harbor most of the US peanut acreage, and Florida is ranked among the top five major peanut producers in the US, with 160 thousand acres planted in 2022 and an annual production value of $130 million in 2021. The majority of peanut acreage in Florida is in the Panhandle and central Florida, in Jackson, Santa Rosa, and Levy counties. Several insect pests feed on various peanut plant parts, including foliage, roots, and fruiting structures. These pests can cause significant damage to the plant canopy and kernels and can also transmit diseases, reducing the quality and quantity of yield if they are not properly detected and managed. This publication serves as a guide for Extension agents and growers to provide an overview of proper sampling techniques and management for peanut pests found in the Florida Panhandle.

Insect Management for Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes, both orange- and white-fleshed varieties, are widely grown in Florida. Foliar pests, leafminers, whiteflies and armyworms, are generally not difficult to manage; in fact insecticides should be avoided to conserve their natural enemies. More serious are those pests whose immature stages feed on roots: sweetpotato weevil, wireworms, banded cucumber beetles, pale-striped and sweetpotato flea beetles, and in south Florida, Diaprepes weevils and white grubs.

Pasture Mealybug: A New Threat for Pasture Grass, Turfgrass, and Sugarcane in Florida

The pasture mealybug (Heliococcus summervillei Brookes) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae), a pest now found in Florida, can cause severe dieback of grasses. It was first reported in the continental US in Texas in October 2025, though researchers suspect it arrived before 2022. In Texas, it was found on many grasses, including bermudagrass, bahiagrass, and johnsongrass. Along with pasture and turfgrass, it has emerged as an important pest of sugarcane, spreading from Texas to Louisiana. In Florida, it was first reported in late May 2026 on limpograss in the southeastern part of the state. As of June 19, 2026, surveys confirmed the mealybug in 15 Florida counties including: Brevard, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Lee, Martin, Okeechobee, Osceola, Palm Beach, Polk, and St. Lucie. The most damage has been observed on limpograss and sugarcane, but several other grasses are affected, including bahiagrass and bermudagrass.

Sorghum Silage as a Feed Alternative for Backgrounding Heifers in Florida

Sorghum has been gaining attention in Florida as a crop alternative harvested as whole plant silage for inclusion in backgrounding diets as the main roughage source to fill the forage gap in winter feeding programs. The objective of this publication is to share the experience of three consecutive years at the North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC) in Marianna, Florida, using whole-plant sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) silage as the main dietary ingredient for growing heifers. County Extension agents and cattle producers can use this report to reference a range of expected weight gains, feed conversion rates, and costs when using sorghum silage as the main dietary ingredient in backgrounding beef cattle diets. Adopting this technology could increase the opportunity for producers to add value to weaned calves across Florida, where there are suitable conditions for growing sorghum.

Survey of Mycotoxins Present in Florida Pastures Across Time, Locations, and Grass Species

The toxicity of grasses caused by mycotoxins has led to economic losses in the United States due to the health impact on livestock feeding on it. Florida's warm and humid weather is favorable for the growth of mycotoxin-producing fungi on grasses. The JECFA has provided evaluations and risk management for some high-risk mycotoxins; however, more research is needed in Florida to determine the maximum levels of these mycotoxins, how different environmental conditions affect these levels, and the specialized risk management to prevent animals from getting sick. Our Extension agents were able to collect and examine 195 grass samples from 13 ranchers across dry and wet seasons in Florida. In this publication, we summarized the results for our ranchers to learn more about (1) what (dominant) mycotoxins are generally present in Florida’s pastures, (2) what grass species could harbor more of these mycotoxins, and (3) what seasons or locations may favor these dominant mycotoxins.

The Sandhills Longhorn Bee, Epimelissodes aegis (LaBerge, 1956) (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Apidae: Apinae)

This publication (part of the Featured Creatures collection, which profiles insects, nematodes, arachnids and other Florida organisms  for interested laypersons with some knowledge of biology and for academic audiences), describes the sandhills longhorn bee, Epimelissodes aegis (LaBerge), a solitary bee known to pollinate sunflowers and related plants. It includes facts about its distribution, biology, and economic importance, and lists its host plants. Members of the genus are found throughout North and Central America, typically burrowing in sandy or well-drained soils. There are currently 20 species across four subgenera, but nesting biology has been described for only five of these, including Epimelissodes aegis. All known species in the genus are hosts to kleptoparasitic bees in the genus Triepeolus, which lay their eggs in the nests of other bees and rely on stolen pollen and nectar provisions to rear their offspring.
